Architecture

The castle of Roccavaldina results from the subtle combination of different styles, each of which originates in it's appropriate era, and makes the castle quite unique.

The visitor can identify three main structures: the tipical midieval norman caslte (main entrance), the renaissance colonnade in the courtyard, and the baroque mansion. It is therefore the most antique portion that gives the building the name of "castle", even if it doesn't do justice to the real spirit of the structure.

  the Castle
The fortified portion is what remains of the norman stronghold, which had four cilinrical towers and a drawbridge. It's defesive character was completed by the absence of openings on the ground floor, narrow windows on the second floor, and crenels.
Of this medieval structure only the two front towers remain, and the beautiful gothic main doorway with iron pointed door.

  the Loggia
On entering the castle through the the main entrance, the visitor notices an sudden and pleasantly surprising change of atmosphere. The austere military atmosphere vanishes, and you find yourself in a delightfully elegant villa. You can the love for beauty and the joy of living of it's owners, who wanted to make any visitor feel at ease. The splendin colonnade is the passage between two different worlds, as if the host wants to say," from here on, your in my home".

  the Mansion
The rest of the mansion is characterized the passage of style between renaissance and baroque. Therefore, tipical baroque decorations are included in a more atique structure, as the shells and pine cones over doors and windows or the balcony supports wich radiate around the building corner, and ad to the castle's unique character.
